The Outsiders is a novel about conflict between two groups that come from different sociological and economical backgrounds. The story takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1966 and mainly deals with the problems teenagers face when approaching young adulthood. We will read how the Greasers and the Socs (short for Socials) learn some very hard lessons in life. Students will also study "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost, the poem S.E. Hinton utilizes to drive home the theme of the story.

I know many teachers disapprove of students using websites such as CliffsNotes; however, I obviously believe otherwise. I find Cliffsnotes to be a wonderful resource for students AND teachers! Look, we are all going to read the book anyway, so why not enhance our understanding of literary elements even more?

Did you know that S.E. Hinton wrote her first draft of The Outsiders at the age of 15? She reveals more about her writing on this page.

SparkNotes is very similar to CliffsNotes and MonkeyNotes. (That sure is a profusion of notes!) It provides excellent chapter summaries, as well as thorough discussions of literary elements in the novel.
