Thanks to director Steven Spielberg, The War of the Worlds is popular science fiction reading once again. While students may be dazzled and terrified by the 2005 blockbuster film, the original classic story was actually written by H.G. Wells more than 100 years earlier! Spielberg's movie encouraged me to introduce the story to a new generation of students. It contains some of my favorite literary elements, such as symbolism and allegory. As an added bonus, we will also discuss the radio adaption by Orson Welles that terrified thousands of people in 1938.
